Hey look everyone: I actually managed to finish reading a book! Hooray! But in all seriousness, I’m considering making every second WBW Book Corner post either a comic book or graphic novel special. So if you have any suggestions as to what comics or graphic novels you would like to see here, drop a comment! Now onto the book:
John J. Cannon successful San Francisco lawyer takes a leave of absence from the firm and buys a boat he names My GRL. He is unaware that his newly-purchased boat had already been targeted by a terrorist group. John’s first inkling of a problem is when he wakes up in the hospital where he learns he was found unconscious next to the dead body of the attractive young woman who sold him the boat in the first place. John now stands between the terrorists and the success of their mission.

It took me waayyyy too long to read this book! In all seriousness I usually take somewhere between 3-6 days to read a book, this one–pfft! Life just got in the way dammit, and I hate that because this book was amazing!
Narrated by the main character of the story, John J. Cannon, written in first person and in the present tense, made the story very enjoyable as you felt that these things were truly going on at that moment in time as you read the story. Add that it was set in the present, made it far easier to see the descriptions of people and places. The only thing I was unsure of was the location, as I’ve never been in that part of the world, so everything was a bit off in that sense.
Why did I like this book? I’ve not read many thrillers in my time–I’m more of a fantasy/sci-fi kind of reader, but if I were to compare this to some of the ones that I have read, it is right up there with them. John manages to keep the story moving at a great pace and I love that you just never know what’s going to happen next!
I’ve read many a blog post by John, and love his Hump Day Stories, but have always wanted more after reading what felt like only a snippet of a story. My GRL really managed to help satisfy that urge as not only was I reading a great story from a great author, but I was getting the whole story!
I would love to see another book by John Howell out there in the world for us to read and I cannot wait for that day as I can only imagine it will be as great and action packed as My GRL!
I gave My GRL 4/5 and you can get your very own copy of it over on Amazon!
