Welcome folks to another Top 5 list here on WBW! This week I want to showcase some of my most anticipated graphic novel releases that are coming out this year in 2015! You’ll be surprised, I think at some of the graphic novels you’ll find in the list below, and others I think you’ll be saying yep, that’s something Dean would read alright! Let me start with one that you mightn’t expect, and I’ll meet you then at the bottom when you’re done:
1. Nimona by Noelle Stevenson
The graphic novel debut from rising star Noelle Stevenson, based on her beloved and critically acclaimed web comic, which Slate awarded its Cartoonist Studio Prize, calling it “a deadpan epic.”
Nemeses! Dragons! Science! Symbolism! All these and more await in this brilliantly subversive, sharply irreverent epic from Noelle Stevenson. Featuring an exclusive epilogue not seen in the web comic, along with bonus conceptual sketches and revised pages throughout, this gorgeous full-color graphic novel is perfect for the legions of fans of the web comic and is sure to win Noelle many new ones.
Nimona is an impulsive young shapeshifter with a knack for villainy. Lord Ballister Blackheart is a villain with a vendetta. As sidekick and supervillain, Nimona and Lord Blackheart are about to wreak some serious havoc. Their mission: prove to the kingdom that Sir Ambrosius Goldenloin and his buddies at the Institution of Law Enforcement and Heroics aren’t the heroes everyone thinks they are.
But as small acts of mischief escalate into a vicious battle, Lord Blackheart realizes that Nimona’s powers are as murky and mysterious as her past. And her unpredictable wild side might be more dangerous than he is willing to admit.
I’ve read Nimona already as it was published twice-weekly on her webcomic, but now I will be able to hold an actual copy in my hand and read it all in one sitting I can not wait! You can check out the webcomic too at gingerhaze.com/nimona, but I recommend you don’t read it all if you really like it and wait to actually get a copy of the graphic novel!
2. Marvel’s Avengers: Rage of Ultron (OGN) by Remender & Opena
It was another glorious victory for the Mighty Avengers. Good triumphed over evil and Ultron was shot into space, never to be seen again. Or so they thought. Now, years later, the homicidal artificial intelligence – so long devoted to ending life on Earth – has a new world to conquer. one with its own horrific legacy. When Titan, birthplace of Thanos, falls, Planet Ultron rises in its place! Thanos’ brother Starfox must seek the aid of his former allies – but the Avengers he finds are radically different from the ones he once knew.
Avengers: Rage of Ultron is an Original Graphic Novel (OGN) being released this year and goddamnit I just can’t wait! I’ve been reading the Avengers comic book for about two years and haven’t missed an issue since then. I’ve been reading the work of the writer and artist, Rick Remender and Jereme Opena, for about 4-5 years now ever since they worked together on Uncanny X-Force and I love them together! I didn’t really want to put a Marvel or DC book on this list, but considering its an OGN, its a Graphic Novel in its own right!
3. The Sculptor by Scott McCloud
David Smith is giving his life for his art – literally. Thanks to a deal with Death, the young sculptor gets his childhood wish: to sculpt anything he can imagine with his bare hands. But now that he only has 200 days to live, deciding what to create is harder than he thought, and discovering the love of his life at the eleventh hour isn’t making it any easier. This is a story of desire taken to the edge of reason and beyond; of the frantic, clumsy dance steps of young love; and a gorgeous, street-level portrait of the world’s greatest city. It’s about the small, warm, human moments of everyday life…and the great surging forces that lie just under the surface.
What can I say–its Scott McCloud for cryin’ out loud! Scott McCloud wrote the book on how comics work; now he vaults into breathtaking, funny, and unforgettable fiction. I can not wait to dive into this beauty!
4. Jaco the Galactic Patrolman by Akira Toriyama
Akira Toriyama, manga legend and creator of Dragon Ball Z, is back with the quirky comedy Jaco the Galactic Patrolman! Retired scientist Omori lives alone on a deserted island while continuing his research into time-travel. His quiet life is interrupted when galactic patrolman Jaco crash-lands and decided to move in with him. Can Jaco get along with the old man long enough to save the earth from a dangerous threat? Includes a special bonus chapter introducing Dragon Ball Z hero Goku’s parents!
This was a very last addition to my list, bumping another graphic novel off for this one to go in its place! I love Dragonball, DBZ, DBGT, I own all 16 Dragonball Manga Graphic Novels, and now to see a new volume of work by the master himself–I’m bursting at the seems!
5. Outcast by Kirkman and Azaceta
NEW HORROR SERIES FROM THE WALKING DEAD CREATOR, ROBERT KIRKMAN! Kyle Barnes has been plagued by demonic possession all his life and now he needs answers. Unfortunately, what he uncovers along the way could bring about the end of life on Earth as we know it! Collects Outcast by Kirkman & Azaceta #1-6.
This graphic novel nearly didn’t make it onto my list due to the fact that it is an ongoing series. I made a rule for myself that when I was compiling these graphic novels, that I wouldn’t include books that were part of an ongoing series. Why then, did I choose Outcast? Purely because it’s by Robert Kirkman creator of TWD, Invincible, The Astonishing Wolf Man, Tech Jacket–need I go on? Also, it is a horror series. TWD is a horror series and it is the greatest thing ever, so I am hoping that, even though Outcast is still in its early days, will live to be as great as The Walking Dead, if not better!
And there you have it–My Top 5 2015 Graphic Novel Releases! Isn’t it exciting??? I just love this list and I can’t wait to get my hands on them all! Are you a keen reader of graphic novels? Have some graphic novels coming out this year that you just can’t wait for? Or maybe there’s a graphic novel out there already and 2015 is the year you’re finally going to read it! Let me know! 🙂
