Friday Fav: Dragon Ball Xenoverse

Welcome to a new segment I want to begin here on WeeBitWordy called ‘Friday Fav’, where every Friday I sit down and tell you guys about my favourite thing of the week! This week is a video game, but that doesn’t mean every week is going to be a video game. Next week I might talk about a book I really like or in fact I might even tell you guys about my favourite brand of coffee and how I like to make it.

This week’s Friday Fav is Dragon Ball XenoVerse by Bandai/Namco Games. Before I begin I am going to express how much of a huge Dragon Ball fan I am. I’ve seen almost every single episode (not including the feature length movie specials) and I even spent one Summer having a marathon of Dragon Ball. I started with Dragon Ball, the prologue about the main character, Goku and his search for the Dragon Balls, then moved onto Dragon Ball Z, and finally Dragon Ball GT, the series that wrapped the whole story up after being left in limbo with DBZ.

When I was younger I used to play the Dragon Ball Z “Tenkaichi” series of games that Namco/Bandai Games released on the PlayStation 2. I played every single one that was released on the PS2, but when it came around to the PS3 games I became quite hesitant. After playing Tenkaichi for so long on the PS2 I was afraid that the repitition of one on one fighting would continue so I avoided the one or two DBZ games that have been released on the PS3 prior to Xenoverse.

When I heard the news that there was another Dragon Ball game coming onto the market, this time for the Playstation 4 as well as the Playstation 3, I wasn’t too enthusiastic about it. At first I was guessing it would just be another one-on-one fighting game, just with slightly better graphics, and the same old story of the three Dragon Ball series mashed together once again. But boy was I wrong! After typing the games’ name into the search engine, I was nearly knocked off my feet with all the cool new things that would be possible with the game. Character Creation was the first one that caught my eye. Now, apparantly you could customise your character in the previous DBZ game, but this time round it was very specific as to the colour of your skin, what race of alien you were, the colour of your clothes and even allowance for in game editing to change costume and add accecsories that would be unlocked throughout the game. There is so much to do though other than that. The main mission of the game is to join Trunks as a member of his Time Patrol and help restore moments in Dragon Ball history that are being altered by two big bads, that will be revealed later in the game. But as well as the main missions, you have side missions too. As a member of the Time Patrol, you can go and revisit moments in time to help boost your own character’s skills and level and fight with or against your fan favourite characters like Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Cell and Super 17. The game also offers you the opportunity to free roam in between main missions and side missions, and allows you to play online with others and compete in tournaments and even do Time Patrol side missions with other online. This isn’t just average one-on-one ‘Tekken’ style fighting game! The best part of this game is that the big bad guys in it are characters we have never met before. These guys have been especially created along with the story specifically for the game, so in a way, the game is one extra long feature length bonus Dragon Ball Movie Extra for all the fans to enjoy! What more could you ask for?!?

I got this game a week ago today and I absolutely love it. It’s so much more than I expected it to be! I can’t wait to keep playing this game and see what else lies ahead in these altered histories. The graphics are great, the story is new and great, the features of the game are even better! So if you are a life long Dragon Ball/Z/GT fan like myself this game is a must have, even if you haven’t played any of the previous DBZ games on other consoles! Have you played this game yet? What do you think of it? Leave a comment below. Hey, why not comment regardless, I’d love to know what you think of the game!

And that just about covers my Favourite of the week! I quite enjoyed this, if I do say so myself and hopefully you’ll join me back here next week for another Friday Fav! Whatever shall it be? 😉

  1. I like this idea a lot. You should set up a hosting thing and have people link up. 😉 But even if not, I’m looking forward to what next Friday brings from you. 🙂
